Three-Pillared Approach to Coaching
My coaching approach blends principles from industrial-organizational psychology, business fundamentals, and over 25 years of real-world experience working in complex legal environments. I rely on proven frameworks rooted in behavioral science, not generic jargon.
Systems Thinking
Behavior Change Science
Communication Precision
Legal work happens inside interconnected ecosystems. I use systems thinking theories to help clients map how these elements interact, identify their place in the system, and build strategies that take the environment into account.
People don't change because someone told them to. I use motivational interviewing to help clients understand their internal drivers, resolve ambivalence, and move toward their own reasons for change and transformation
My methodology focuses on how people structure ideas, make decisions and tradeoffs, and convey information under pressure. Message discipline and cognitive clarity aren't soft skills; they're performance multipliers.

About Ryan Black
Ryan Black is a consultant and executive coach who helps ambitious legal professionals and teams move from complexity to clarity. Blending legal, operational, and organizational expertise with a dual foundation in psychology and business, he brings a pragmatic, client-centered approach to coaching.
Ryan’s career began in the fast-paced world of AmLaw 100 firms, supporting debt finance, M&A, and corporate governance practices in Austin, Boston, and San Francisco. After over fifteen years in BigLaw, he shifted into tech—building and leading Corporate Governance, Legal Operations, and Chief of Staff functions at companies including Uber, Instacart, Opendoor, and DoorDash.
Today, Ryan combines that operational depth with coaching insight to help individuals and legal teams perform at their highest level. His advisory work spans career management, legal operations strategy, talent development, organizational design, conflict resolution, change management, and AI prompt engineering for law departments.
Outside of work, Ryan is a runner, baker, and self-proclaimed cat dad. He’s four years into learning Spanish—a practice that’s taught him as much about patience as it has about language—and remains loyal to Texas Longhorn football and the Oxford comma.
